DESCRIPTION
A great deal of controversy still surrounds the last Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Army. In this candid autobiography, Lieutenant-General Gul Hassan Khan has attempted to ‘set the record straight’.
The author recounts with humour and affection his experiences as ADC to Viscount Slim, towards the end of the Second World War. The months he spent as ADG to the Quaid-i-Azam gave him an insight into the character of the founder of Pakistan. This enables him to assess, in the light of standards set by Jinnah, the politicians who later occupied centre-stage. Perhaps because of these early experiences, the author’s main concern is with leadership, with the rapport that is, or should be, established between the commander and the men he leads.
Having given an account of the evolution of higher command, General Gul Hassan narrates and analyses dispassionately the events of the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971.
The final section of the book covers events after the fall of Dhaka, and deals with the author’s relationship with Zulfikar All Bhutto.
